Cyprus Airways was founded in September 1947 as a joint venture of the colonial government of Cyprus, British European Airways and private investors. The airline commences its flight operations in April 1948 with services to destinations in route network centered in Nicosia which soon expanded to include London, Rome, Athens, Beirut, Istanbul, Cairo and Haifa. Currently, the airline is the national air carrier of Cyprus with its head office in Nicosia. Cyprus Airways has its main hub at Larnaca International Airport with focus cities at Athens International Airport and Paphos International Airport. Excluding the code share destinations, the airline serves over 24 destinations across Europe and the Middle East. It has a code share agreement with Virgin Atlantic Airways to expand its network to include destinations like New York, Boston, Newark and Los Angeles, with connecting flights to Heathrow Airport, London. Presently, Cyprus Airways is jointly owned by the government of Cyprus (69.62%) and private shareholders (30.38%).
